What do The Beach Boys, 2Pac, and Tony Bennett all have in common?
No, this isn’t a trick question. All three of them expressed a love for California in their music, and they are far from the only ones to do so. California is one of the most sung about places in the world, and The Beach Boys’ California Girls, 2Pac’s California Love, and Tony Bennett’s I Left My Heart in San Francisco are just three of the better-known songs.
Sometimes as residents ourselves it can be easy to forget how incredible California really is. In the Inland Empire, we are just a short drive away from so many incredible places.
Want to spend the day at the beach? In less than an hour you can have your towel laid out in the sand. Prefer the crisp mountain air? Multiple mountain ranges are even closer than the beach! Want to relax by a pool and enjoy some dry heat? Palm Springs is calling your name!
The list could go on and on. However, the following are three places in Southern California that are perfect for a weekend trip. They are also, of course, known for their low levels of crime and overall safety, making them perfect for a family trip or a weekend getaway with your significant other.
Arrowhead and Big Bear are in the mountains east of us. While they are well-known for their skiing and snowboarding during the winter, they are actually great places to go during the summer as well. Lake Arrowhead is a relatively small lake (48,000 acre-feet), but it is surrounded by breathtaking views and equally breathtaking vacation homes. During the summer, the lake is filled with families playing watersports, or just relaxing on the tranquil lake on a raft.
As the name would suggest, Big Bear Lake is the bigger of the two lakes in the mountain range to the east, with about 73,320 acre-feet of volume. Big bear also has a larger city surrounding it, and is a popular fishing destination. One advantage of Big Bear over Arrowhead Lake is the abundance of public docking facilities, which is useful if you aren’t renting one of the expensive lake houses that have their own private dock.
Located about 100 miles south of the Inland Empire, San Diego is an international tourist destination that we have the good fortune of being within day-trip distance from. If you are looking for a romantic weekend getaway, San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District is filled with delicious restaurants, bars, and lounges. If you prefer to spend your time in the sand, Mission Beach is full of scenic hotels, such as the Crystal Pier Hotel. You’ll also have easy access to a wide variety of watersports in Mission Bay.
Laguna Beach is one of the most expensive places to live in the world. Fortunately, if you live in the Inland Empire, you can visit Laguna Beach for the weekend without it costing an arm and a leg.
Laguna Beach is best known for two things: gorgeous beaches and a world-class art scene. Their marquee summer art festival is known as the Festival of Arts, and the main event is the Pageant of the Masters. If you are interested in art and have never been to the pageant before, tickets are still available for this month’s show.
