Just want to say THANK YOU to you (Mike O'Neill) and also Richard!! Richard is very professional in performing his function.
About a year ago, the local alarm company executive and fellow employees decided to add another service - in addition to installing an anti-burglary system - that would contribute to their victimized customers' emotional well-being. In cooperation with Foothill Psychological Associates Inc., the company gives clients a certificate good for a free counseling session upon the purchase of a Mijac alarm system. Certificates are valued at $150, and must be used within 30 days after an alarm system is purchased. To get the perk, it will run a customer anywhere from $700 to $3000 to install an alarm depending on its sophistication. Only 11 percent of single-family homes are rigged with home security devices, Sopkin said - a fact that keeps burglars in business. "I think any form of visible security pushes a burglar to go to the next door," Sopkin said. Mijac installers have issued about 20 certificates thus far. The incentive gets the company new customers, and attracts some potentially long-term clients for Upland based Foothill Associates, Sopkin said. But the customer also receives a benefit, he said. " The user gets the peace of mind" Michael Geffen, a clinical psychologist for Foothill Associates, said a "debriefing" process is used to treat the victims of robberies, break-ins or holdups - the latter being most common to banks or retail outlets. The key is getting people to talk about their feelings and relive the incident if possible, he said. Most post-trauma reactions can be cured by a single visit to the psychologist's office, Geffen said. Cases that can't be immediately reconciled are those in which victims are suffering severe trauma, usually rooted in personal problems that developed prior to the crime itself, Geffen said. We do debriefings for a lot of different places," he said. "We do this for banks, fire departments, police." Mijac's counseling session offer is one of several innovative services in place at the company, according to Sopkin. The company's business creativity was recognized earlier this month when the alarm executive was named small businessman of the year by the Upland Chamber of Commerce. Another good Samaritan program at Mijac helps stranded motorists who have yellow-and-black company logo stickers affixed to their vehicles. Under the "Helping Hands" program, Mijac employees receive a $100 reward when they stop to help a disabled motorist displaying one of the stickers.
